Tivo Update

millsb and DX30

I want to very tentatively say that after changing the MAC address and the IP address of the 2nd Tivo it appears to have made a daily call, connected, downloaded and is currently at 26% Loading Data so I guess if it succeeds the next moment will be when the 1st Tivo makes it's daily call this evening.

So...thank you to you guys for helping/guiding me thru all the steps over the last week or so...as I'm sure you've guessed I'm a total novice when it comes to all things network based and didn't have the slightest clue even what telnet etc. was, it's been a very steep learning curve for me and probably an annoying moment for you!!!!

Fingers crossed the next bit goes ok!!

You guys might just be legends!!!!!!

I hope it goes well but there is still a question as to what exactly went wrong. The duplicate MAC addresses would have been a problem but it also worth checking for IP address conflicts to avoid possible future problems.

I don't use 192.168.1.200 with my TiVo because it is in the range of DHCP addresses given out by my current router (192.168.1.64 - 192.168.1.237). There is the possibility that addresses in this range will be given to another device, so I changed my TiVo to use 192.168.1.10. My previous router used a different DHCP range that didn't include 192.168.1.200 so it would be OK.

See if you can find the DHCP address range you router gives out and make sure it doesn't include the IP addresses your TiVo's are using. I'm afraid the exact place you'll find this info varies so it may take some hunting around. In my case I have to go to Advanced Settings, Home Network, IP Addresses where I find an Enable DHCP Server tick box together with the Start and End Addresses.

Ok, I'm looking in to the router settings..but I think my router gives out dhcp addresses between 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.254 so the 2 TiVos are falling in to that range as they are 192.168.1.201 and 192.168.1.203. It looks as if there is an option in the router settings to reserve ip addresses - do you think that would mean I could reserve those 2 addresses purely for the TiVos. From what I can see you choose the addresses and enter the MAC address for the devices. I'm amazed it took so long for something to be given the TiVos ip addresses by the router, if, of course, that's what the problem was.
I'm still waiting on the next daily call to be made by TiVo 1, it looks like its due at around 10:30pm...if its successful that will be the moment that I'm convinced things are ok!!!

If you can reserve the IP addresses used by the TiVo's that would be a good idea.

My router doesn't support that but I could have changed the router DHCP end address so it gives out 192.168.1.64 - 192.168.1.199 and done it that way. It was just easier in my case to change the TiVo to something already unused.

Try forcing a daily call; this may be a coincidence. My networked TiVo fails its daily call from time to time, usually claiming an interrupted call, but works fine most of the time.

was very definitely back to square one this morning with Tivo 1 unable to make daily call again. I looked at the devices on the network and they were Tivo 2 (which appeared to be calling ok) an iMac desktop, Ipad2 and an Ipad 1.

The router has a dhcp range between 2 and 200, the tivos are 201 and 202. The MAC addresses are not the same on the Tivos.
I removed everything from the network, powered off the router each time, so that tivo 1 was the only thing left, once the network was clear it eventually made its daily call.

What's going on!!!
It couldn't call until the last device was off the network...which happened to be tivo 2

I'm afraid I'm running out of idea's. A conflicting MAC or IP address is the usual problem but you have changed those so I don't really see why the two TiVo's won't co-exist.

Clutching at straws I have seen reports of problems using Homeplugs, but I use them myself and haven't had problems with my TiVo. Still if at all possible I'd try and use a proper ethernet cable to connect both TiVo's, even if only on a temporary basis. (I'm assuming you went back to the Homeplugs). If everything works when directly connected by cable there are alternatives to using the Homeplugs (e.g. a wireless bridge) but it is only worth looking into them if you establish the Homeplugs are causing problems. I'm doubtful if they are but I cannot think of anything else to try at the moment.
