I would like to upgrade to a larger HD and add the TiVo to the network, though I don't follow what that involves.

Got mine for my dev TiVo from NZ. About £40 depending on exchange rate. Delivery speed was electric - about 4 days.

It works out-of-the-box with the altEPG image (it's a Turbonet clone).
6023 - was 40GB - upgraded to cachecard and 250gb
6021 - was 40GB - upgraded to 120gb and Turbonet - further upgraded to 250gb still with Turbonet
6020 - was 40GB - for dev work - currently running a 500GB Samsung HM500JI and a TurboNZet

Just order a drive and network cachecard from tivoland.
If you get stuck fitting any of it then just shout in these forums...
Easy peasy... (well most of the time)

In addition to the option of ordering a bulk number of Turbonet cards or Cachecards from 9th Tee (who surely might be interested to clear their stock at a good price at this stage in the history of the Tivo S1) I take it that Dave is also aware of the option of having John Mckirdy (aka Skolink) make a batch of TivoNZ cards for us at a good bulk price?
