Turbo Network Card

I took a slightly different approach for my two networked Tivos & used a Neutrik feedthrough RJ45:



It's more work as it requires removing or protecting the mainboard from steel swarf & punching a 24mm dia. hole in the back panel, but once done it looks like it was meant to be there.`A short patch cable runs internally to the back of the socket.

I downloaded and burned the iso, it seemed straight forward except when I try to boot to it I get an error. "only one processor found"

Quick question, does anyone know how to stop them both reporting the same Mac addresses to the router.

I have modified the mac address on one via telnet and the "nic_config_tivo", it shows it's changed, but the old "default" one is still presented to the router, hence both are getting the same IP address assigned.

PS you don't have to get as fancy with the network jack, I used to just run my cable out a cooling hole near the fan (yes I had to recrimp a new connector). Tin snips will work in a pinch...if you are in a hurry...but watch for metal filings left inside!

The best tool I've found for cutting holes in cases with boards in situ is a "Nibbler tool". It works at right angles to the surface and takes small "bites" a few mm across out of the metal, so it's easy to insert it through an existing hole and just "nibble" it out to size. Because the "bites" are pretty large, there's a greatly reduced risk of losing one on a circuit board. They only cost a few pounds too.

If you're using the altepg image with a turbonet or clone, be aware that nic_config_tivo won't do anything useful for you. All it does is rewrite /etc/rc.d/rc.net, which only works with the cachecard NIC.

If you're using the altepg image with a turbonet or clone, be aware that nic_config_tivo won't do anything useful for you. All it does is rewrite /etc/rc.d/rc.net, which only works with the cachecard NIC.

Brian is correct, there is a new AltEPG image with bug fixes that I will upload soon. The silicon dust nic_config_tivo should not be used the new image!
The new image automatically detects which NIC your using and loads the relevant driver. DHCP is working by default for all cards and changes made on the AltEPG ISO will take effect properly (on any NIC) should you need to switch from DHCP to Static.

I haven't used that network config iso before. I've just now downloaded and burned it. Tried it on 2 computers. Both give the "only one processor" error. One does boot OK and the command line appears to work. The other complains of "lost interrupt" several times but does eventually boot.

I downloaded nic_cd_lba48_20050218.iso from http://forum.technicalpeak.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=13 and burned that. No better!
