Can you change the swap file size by telnet after the drive is in the tivo?
providing the tivo is up and running of course.

Asking as I installed another tivo with the AltEPG image and I did not change that swap file either.
That one has not had a problem but if I can telnet into it, run nic_config_tivo and change the swapfile size, I could, possibly, head of this problem in the future.

By the way, my Tivo is back - re-imaged it last night and left it thinking about the data guide at 2am this morning :)

Welcome. Powering up...

Almost there.
A few more seconds please...

A severe error has occurred.
Please leave the receiver plugged in in and connected to the phone line for the next 24 hours while the receiver attempts to repair itself.
DO NOT UNPLUG OR RESTSART THE RECEIVER.
If, after 24 hours, the recorder does not restart itself, call Customer support.

It then almost immediately reboots and goes back to the top (I had to use my phone's video recorder to be able to read the last message).

So what has happened, and would it be fair to say that my TiVo is now bricked???

Edit: OK, on further investigation it looks like this is nothing to do with altEPG; my hard drive has coincidentally died. Bugger.

Did you ever get this problem resolved? one of my TiVo's has just died and has had the Green Screen of Death which just causes the TiVo to loop the initialisation sequence, the green screen only stays on screen for about 1 second so I recorded it and it says the same as you said in your earlier post, the HD sounds as if it is running although I appreciate this is not a scientific test but with some drives when they die they just stop spinning and won't re-start.

Should I consider swapping the HD or maybe try reformatting and re-installing the altEPG OS?? anyone got any good ideas.....
Peter

Tinkering with TiVo's since 2000, now have 8 lifetime sub S1 TiVo's in various states of upgrade/hacked condition & 4 non-lifetime sub TiVo's, too boring to list all the details but most have upgraded HD's & network cards

Peter,

I had to rip the drive, reformat, re-install the ALTepg and increase the swap file size.

Thanks, to be honest I was thinking this may be the case, just hate the thought of losing all the films that I had been recording to watch over xmas.

BTW. what size cache did you use, I think this drive is 500GB

Hi Gaz,

Thanks again, I'll try a 250mb cache and see if that works, also I have been reading the latest release 1.0c has a few refinements so it's probably time for a re-format and a system clear out and see how the latest release stacks up.

Not looking forward to all the repeats that the beeb has been promising us which is what will be on the menu if I don't get this sorted soon

TV is pretty rubbish at normal times in the year - at Xmas it seems worse.

I'm quite happy with the ALTepg, only thing that drives me mad is when use tivowebplus you click on a title in Now playing list and you get all the programs in your tivo - I don't need to know what I recorded, and when you have 100's it takes ages to scroll to the bottom to see what is coming up - be nice to be able to disable that so "now showing" is ONLY shown when in now showing list

Wonder if ALTepg will auto update at some point

Good Luck with the reformat.

Yes that is in the plan - though (deliberately) it won't be completely automatic: we will offer updates and you'll be able to decide whether you want them or not.

BTW for hacks like tivowebplus which are developed and maintained separately from altepg, all we will do is provide the ability to take the latest published version of that particular hack. I don't know whether the problem you've got with now playing is fixed in the latest version?

Hopefully this won't involve ripping the drive and plugging into a PC, will it be a network update/grade? like the daily "phone call" for guide data

the NPL is just something that bugs me, only started doing it with the new ALTepg image, before that I never had the problem.

Thanks

Details belong on a different thread - but yes software updates will be part of the daily call. There will be no need to pull out the drive.

Yes, It has. Sorry, can't remember which patch it was, but look in the Tivoweb thread, and - well, you may as well bung them all in... :)

Ian,

Could you PM the link to the tivoweb thread or where I should be looking, I have been looking (and possibly going right past it LOL) but I can't use search as "tivoweb" is too common a word it seems LOL

For information altepg1.0c contains tivowebplus2.1b3 with patch 110726 as detailed here: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=903&start=15#p8288

That's what I meant by the "latest" version.
