Yes, I know - it was complete with a "Change of Line Up" and EPG to 7 July.

Mike, have you noticed that everyone else posts their replys after the post they are quoting. It's difficult to follow what is your bit and what others have said if you top post.

Ohhh, I finally mamaged to dial into the old EPG on the 0845 number, its doing the 2nd call of guided set up now.

so hopefully I am out of guided set up hell and can at least access the tivo for a while!

And will wait for more lines to be installed before moving to alt-epg, though boyfriend seemed to understand the terms serial port and telnet (i knew dating a IT geek would come in handy :D ) so possibly i can use the 0845 number on alt-epg soon.

Boy, you were lucky! I've just tried, with no success.

Experts, please... Is TiVo clever enough to know that it already has the latest EPG data? Does it check, realise that it doesn't need to go the download stage, and give a Failed. Number not answering message? Because when I tried, the call seemed to be answered, and connected, before giving that failed message.

Its weird the way it works some of the time but not other parts of the time. I can only presume that not all lines on that number are configured in the same way and that only some of them understand the Tivo's ancient data communication protocols.

so hopefully I am out of guided set up hell and can at least access the tivo for a while!

Hooray. I was feeling bad about having encouraged you to dial a number that got you in to that situation.

However hopefully when the AltEPG has more lines available in a week or two's time you can just do a straightforward Guided Setup over to it and make daily calls to it with the regular Tivo modem connection. If you want to do the whole upgraded hard drive and network card thing its probably going to cost you around £100 even if you train the boyfriend to do it the hard but also cheap way with a bare hard drive and so on. Alternatively if you buy a pre configured drive and network card from www.tivoland.com or www.TC.co.uk its going to cost more like at least £150 or perhaps more. Even then your boyfriend would need to wield a screwdriver to prise the lid off your Tivo and drop the new drive and network card in to it and pull the old hard drive. But that's a lot of money to spend on an old device. On the other hand the network card solution saves the ongoing cost of phone calls now that they are chargeable (unless you have an any Anytime Calls plan and the AltEPGs 01 numbers do not get excluded from such plans which definitely cannot be guaranteed) and this might add up to quite a lot of money over say five years.

In any case well done on defeating Tivo's best efforts to try and kill off your Tivo.

No if there was no new data to collect you would still get a Setting Clock and Succeeded message when the daily call completed. You only get the Failed message because the Tivo isn't managing to get through to Tivo's servers at all.

If you are with various cheap phone providers it might be worth trying putting 1280 in front of the 020 or 0845 number as that would force the call to be routed via BT's network and they probably have less flakey lines with less heavily voip based strangulation of the modem signal that may be causing the call to fail. On the other hand if you are a TalkTalk or Virgin Media phone customer you won't be able to use the 1280 prefix as their phone solution does not use BT Wholesale phone line equipment.

i already have my Torx screwdriver and have managed to get the back off myself (about 6 years ago when i upgarded the hard drive to a much larger one) so thats okay.

Its all back working now, though indexing the data. Will wait and see how people progress with converting to alt-epg over next week or so. Though if the old 0845 number works, i'll stick with that (even at 10p a minute) for a while.

0845 normal tivo number was definately NOT working earlier today when i tried so it may not be tivo specific.

Thanks, Pete. I don't think the call is failing in that sense, I suspect everything will work fine on Monday. I was just trying to think how Mike got a successful download today.

I'm on Pipex, which is Talk Talk now - what isn't! But my phone line is rented by Pipex from BT, and BT fix any faults, so I should be able to use that 1280 prefix? If so, would using it affect whether calling a particular number would be free in an anytime package by any chance? Don't know what Pipex do, but if it was sent through BT, I'm pretty sure their package would treat the 0207 number as free. Or is it charged before it gets routed - probably.

The consensus is that the 0207 number will be up again on Monday. Would that be cheaper for you?

The position is very complicated with TalkTalk as whilst its BT's piece of copper in the ground to the exchange TalkTalk has fully unbundled all their customers on exchanges where they also have broadband LLU equipment so whilst the copper belongs to BT Wholesale the phone line equipment you are connected to in the exchange belongs to TalkTalk so the calls are probably also carried on TalkTalk's phone network and not BT Wholesale's On the other hand in the countryside on non LLU exchanges TalkTalk still use BT Wholesale for everything including the exchange equipment.

Whether an 0845 or 020 call is covered within a bundle can only really be determined by calling it and then checking an online phone bill a day or two later as it seems some both 0845 and 020 numbers formally identified as being dialup ISP numbers are excluded from inclusive minutes by phone companies but not all phone numbers used for data or internet access have been so identified by all telcos. Clearly the most popular ones for large scale dial up internet access have been so identified but UUnet's numbers probably don't fall in to that category. So the answer is check as you may well be charged but then again you may not be, especially if you have an Anytime calls package.

Are you sure that its only your boyfriend who is something of a geek then. :P

It sounds to me lke you could probably also install your own network card at a push, especially if you also bought a new hard drive with the right drivers on it preinstalled from Tivoland or TC. Sticking a network card in the network card slot and bending up one of the metal tabs on the Tivo backplate to stick a network cable through isn't much harder than fitting a replacement hard drive. The really nasty stuff involves hooking up hard drives to PCs and messing around with MFS and Linux commands at a system prompt but that can all be avoided by buying a pre configured drive and network card.

Hmmm. You ain't kidding, that is complicated. Don't even know how to look at my Pipex bill online. I'll have to find out. Thanks.

yes, i will change it to that on Monday (mostly the phone hasn't been connected anyway in case it dialled up and tivo said CLOSED ACCOUNT). I just wanted anything to get access to my tivo again, rather than be stuck in set up. makes me realise how much i'll miss the thing

(and i have sky + as well so its not like i'll be pvr less)

1. Go to TIvo Central by Pressing the Tivo button on the remote.

2. Select Messages & Setup

3. Select Recorder & Phone Setup

4. Select Phone Connection

5. Select Change Dialling Options

6. Select Set Dial Prefix

7. Enter either 02079061000 or 08450885336 according to personal preference and press Select

8. Select Accept and test new options

9. Once the Test Phone Connection call has been made and succeeded Select Use these dialling options

10. Select Make Daily Call Now To Update your Tivo using the newly installed number

11. Leave the Tivo to take maily daily calls on its own using the newly entered phone number

THanks - one of the best posts in the whole forum to see what we should be doing.
