getting connected to tivo web

Postby jonmon » Mon Oct 10, 2011 10:38 pm

Hi there :D
I have just bought new hard drive with software already installed from tivo central. I can get tivo web to work on my network but I gave my friend my network ip address and says could not connect to server. I have tried it with my 3g phone and it doesn't work either. I dont know much about this stuff but do think its the modem thats the prob not the tivo and its something i got to change on the modem web page? The modem is a Thomson modem from plusnet. Could anyone tell me what I need to do to get connected to tivo web outside my network?
thanks for any help

I'm on Plusnet and have a Thomson router. I've no idea if it's the same model as yours but on mine the routers configuration page is accessed via http://192.168.1.254/.

You have to set up some port-forwarding rules which on the Thomson is done via the Toolbox using the "Game & Application Sharing". As best as I can remember this is the method...

1) Select "Create a new game or application"
2) Give it a name you can remember and set it to "Manual Entry of Port Maps".
3) Set the "trigger" to TCP, "port range" to 8080-8080 and "translate to" to 80.
4) Now select "Assign a game or application to a local network device"
5) Under "Game or Application" in the drop-down box select the name you entered for step 2)
6) Under "Device" select "<User defined...>".
7) Enter the IP address of the TiVo in the new box that just appeared.
8) Click ADD.

That should be it. No need to reboot or save settings. You can access your TiVo from your 3G phone but you have append ":8080" to get the cirrect port address, for example: http://123.132.213.231:8080

It's a real good idea to also edit the tivoweb.cfg file on the TiVo to add a UserName and Password, otherwise every passing wannabe hacker will be in there messing up yout TiVo.

EDIT: For 8) read 8) ... stupid bbcodes.

Hi
thanks for the reply
I have followed the instructions you gave me but not sure that i have done it correctly. Not sure if I have done line 3 correctly. When I get to the last bit "user defined" I dont get a box to put the tivo ip address in. The page I am on just comes up again and user defied goes to apple tv.

I have done protocol "any" port range "8080 to 8080" translate to "80" and trigger protocol drop down menu "TCP" trigger port is blank but I dont think that can be write can it ?

I think it is the same router as the number is the same in the web browser.

Thanks again for the help :D

Hi :)
I have looked at this site that was suggested, http://www.pcwintech.com/port-forwardin ... n-firmware

I dont really understand the port that needs to be forward, how do you know its 8080? This is a bit frustrating, I dont think it can be that difficult but I just dont understand whats what when it comes to this router internet stuff. The site suggests different ports but I am guessing that there is a right port for my tivo:?: I dont know what I am doing really need more.
thanks

You should get this:

If you don't then it will be one of the items in that drop-down list. If you are using a TurboNet card I would expect it to be "Unknown-00-0B-AD-69-C6-67" because the default TuboNet MAC address is 00:0B:AD:69:C6:67.

I have tried what you suggested, sort of, I notice on the drop down menu on the "Device" it shows altepgtivo so I guess this is what I am after. I have selected it and selected add and now in the list. I have tried it with the phone and it didnt work. So I dont know what I am doing wrong. Have you any other ideas :)

You have to upload images to another web site first. I use http://tinypic.com/ then copy&paste the "Direct Link for Layouts" link.

The port forwarding rule should look like this:

It might help to turn on logging (you can change this using the "configure" link top right). Any attempts to use port redirection with show up if you use "View event logs" from the main menu.

This is what I did in order from your instructions, I also did this page like this

I am not sure if you can tell what I am doing wrong from these images but worth a try
thanks :)

Looks as though that should work. I realise that it would be clearer is step 3) read:
3) Set the "protocol" to TCP, "port range" to 8080 to 8080 and "translate to" to 80.

But since protocol defaults to Both is should work anyway.

The only other thing is to check that "altepgtivo" is correct. I've remembered that under "Home Network" if you click on "Devices" it shows a complete list of all device names & ip addresses so that you can check you have the correct one.

Have you tried it with the log file turned on? Should be a line similar to this at the top of the log:
FIREWALL rule : Protocol: TCP Src ip: xx.xxx.xxx.xxx Src port: 50584 Dst ip: 192.168.1.200 Dst port: 8080 Chain: forward_host_service Rule Id: 1 Action: accept

You're looking in the wrong place. Under Home Network then Devices you should see something like:
Image

To turn on logging click the configure link top right:
Image

If you scroll down you have an edit link to the right of the entry for the tivo. Click the edit link and you can enable logging.

Does the original poster understand that the IP address his mobile device (or his friend with his home PC or mobile phone) needs to use is the WAN address of his Thomson Gateway, not the IP address of his TiVo on the home LAN? And he probably doesn't get a static address from his ISP so will need to use a Dynamic DNS service such as dyndns.org or similar.
