Commercial advertising

Postby spitfires » Tue Nov 08, 2011 7:18 pm

So the alleged "community" project has now gone beyond the optimistically titled "sponsored by..." and is now using the daily programme updates to send out sales e-mails actively favouring one commercial business (over any other). Really? I despair.

I'd have put money on you being the first and probably only one to post a rant

Hardly a rant. I just can't believe you had the nerve to do this. And then have the front to sign it from "The AltEPG Team."! Astonishing.

It seems you have dropped what little pretence remained that you view this project as your own personal little fiefdom.

I don't even believe your "complaint" post's are genuine anymore, I just think you like to have a dig because your one of those people that bares a grudge (after our falling out previously) and you just can't help yourself.

As far as I'm concerned, I am a providing a genuine benefit to the community by offering up Cachecards for the lowest price they have ever been in the UK.
Sure I still make a bit of profit from them, but ask anyone who was thinking about buying one whether they'd rather me not do this and leave them at the original price!?

After the last tirade of abuse I received from you several months ago, I was very tolerant and hoped you would calm down and just contribute to the community instead of contaminate it as you do from time to time.
I'm telling you now, I'm not prepared to go through all that again and have you abuse me on my own board!!

So in the interests of fairness you have no problems with sending out a similar TiVo message from "The AltEPG Team" promoting Tivo.Central's latest special offer then?

So you will only promote stuff which benefits the AltEPG management team then (i.e. yourself)? That's good to know.

Indeed it is :-) One just needs to be aware of where and why the info is coming from.

It does also benifit the end user as well

My point is there may be better deals (or even simply 'other' deals) out there which won't be promoted simply because they don't benefit Tivoland.

E.g. let's say you get a message on your TiVo advertising £10 off new discs - you might find that a different supplier is offering £20 off, but you won't be told about the better deal simply because you will only be sent deals from Tivoland.

If this really was a 'community' project then surely any and all deals (not just Tivoland's) should be promoted if they benefit the end-user?

EDIT: Note I'm not talking about the advertising of alternative deals/suppliers on this forum since we know that has already been banned, but push advertising via TiVo mail messages takes it to a whole new level!

Well for a start off, that not the case in this instance.

My flagrant abuse of the messaging system (1 message in 10 months) is absolutely shocking I know

This just proves this is not about me abusing the system, is about your issue with me.

Frankly its not your position to police AltEPG and its getting tiring not just for me but for others as well it seems!
So do us and yourself a favour and keep your petty opinions and dislikes about how I run this board and my involvement in the AltEPG project to yourself in future!

Is this a private spat or can anyone comment? We real TIVO users are a small embattled bunch so personally I have no objection at all to a modest amount of relevant advertising - it is after all tucked away in messages rather than shoved in your face during programming. People posting here are obviously in touch with what is available to keep our TIVOs working but there must be some who just use them and may not be aware there are people who can fix or upgrade them ( mind, they won't have a clue what TIVOWeb is all about ). After years of no messages ( until the final bad news ) I'm pleased to see any message!

I haven't had a message on my TiVo, which is a bit worrying, cos I wouldn't want to miss something important. I'm using dial-up, and only once a week - does that explain why nothing appeared?

And yes, a few adverts are no problem.

Not really, you should still get the message unless your TiVo has not dialled since Monday?
