Has anyone actually managed to perform daily updates using this method and, if so, what changes to tivo files were necessary/? .
I have made the necessary changes to the windows Hayes modem inf file and can create the Incoming calls / unathenticated user icons in Network connections, enabling me to telnet into tivo and also access tivoweb but access to the tivo server does not work for me (It did work in earlier versions of altepg, with a couple of modifications to certain tivo files.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

From the lack of replies, I take it that nobody has tried/succeeded in this matter.
Seems I'm stuck with having to switch between Windows and Ubuntu - the latter providing easy access to serial ppp.

The only thing I can think of is that the Windows PPP server is not passing packets from Tivo to the outside world.
I remember I did get it working using WinXP as the PPP server, but it was many months ago on an old altepg image. A couple of things to check:
1. In control panel / network connections / incoming connections (i.e. the incoming PPP connection) go to properties / networking / TCP/IP; check that Windows is assigning a suitable IP address for your LAN and make sure that 'allow callers to access my LAN' is ticked.
2. With the PPP connection up, telnet in to tivo and run ifconfig and route.tivo to check that tivo knows to use the Windows end of the PPP link as the default gateway. Then try pinging the IP address of your router from tivo, and if that works, try pinging the altepg server (194.1.151.205).
I vaguely remember I had to hack one of the itcl libraries on tivo to delete /var/tmp/pppaddr to stop tivo trying to use the modem for a daily call, but I thought that was no longer necessary on the recent altepg images?

1. In control panel / network connections / incoming connections (i.e. the incoming PPP connection) go to properties / networking / TCP/IP; check that Windows is assigning a suitable IP address for your LAN and make sure that 'allow callers to access my LAN' is ticked.Everything checks out OK - The assigned ip's are 192.168.2.1/192.168.2.2
2. With the PPP connection up, telnet in to tivo and run ifconfig and route.tivo to check that tivo knows to use the Windows end of the PPP link as the default gateway. Then try pinging the IP address of your router from tivo, and if that works, try pinging the altepg server (194.1.151.205).From a tivo bash prompt, the values reported by ifconfig and route.tivo are identical from both Windows and Ubuntu - but, cannot ping the epg server, using Windows
I vaguely remember I had to hack one of the itcl libraries on tivo to delete /var/tmp/pppaddr to stop tivo trying to use the modem for a daily call, but I thought that was no longer necessary on the recent altepg images?
This is a really weird problem.

I followed the instructions given in the "serial access perchance" thread on the installation and config board and all went well for me. I have xp pro on my laptop with a serial to usb adapter through to the tivo.
