Guided set up - Network Help :0)

Postby adamfoulkes » Wed Mar 14, 2012 5:36 pm

Hello,
I have bought a used tivo with cachecard and ram.
I registered for altepg and i have had confirmation. I have no idea how to get the box to work via network. i have plugged the tivo onto a home plug - thinking it would just work but I have entered guided set up and I cannot get it to download any info.
I have tried looking at the forums but it all seems very technical (of which normally I am not too bad) but this is baffling me a bit. Can anyone take the time to help? I am stiuck with an unuseable tivo at the minute.
Cheers

To start with I would suggest connecting Tivo to your router via a network cable if possible; once you've got it working with a direct connection you can move on to the homeplug.

Do you know if your Tivo is running the altepg disk image? If so, it generates a system message at startup to tell you what ip address it has been allocated - is the allocated address in your LAN's IP range? To help further it would be useful to know your network setup, in particular the address of your router and subnet mask.

Hello
It is a regular TiVo image. I would find it hard to connect to my TiVo to my router as it is in the study. I have no tv in there to see what the display is saying. Do u mean I should do this to to set uP the box? I have looked on my router settings and I cannot see the TiVo on the network.
The cachecard and wifi drivers do load though.
Cheers

I just realised I had the wrong service number registered. I have corrected this now. I have ran set up and managed to get back to the regular TiVo menu. My router does not seem to recognise the tivo even though I have plugged it directly in. Do I need to change anything on my router box to get it to recognise?
I thought this would be so simple!
How wrong I was! Thanks for your help in advnace!

Firstly, you should understand that there is no standard configuration for a TiVo with cachecard fitted, so saying "it is a regular tivo image" doesn't really help.

From the information you've posted so far it is not possible to tell what you would need to do to get things working. Can you tell us a bit about this TiVo: who you bought it from, has it previously been used with the AltEPG service? If you can tell us your TiVo's service number then we can check it against the server logs, which might give some further clues.

I could speculate that the problem is that your TiVo has a static IP address, and that this is in a range that is not recognised by your router. If that's the case then most likely your TiVo IP address is either 192.168.0.xxx or 192.168.1.xxx. Your router's IP address would need to be in the same range (eg if TiVo is 192.168.0.100 and router is 192.168.1.254 then they won't be able to see one another). So you could try changing your router's IP address and see if that has any effect.

If your TiVo is set up to use DHCP (the official AltEPG images are set up like this) then it should acquire its IP address from the router and it should all be automatic. Is your router set up as a DHCP server?

Hi,
thanks for responding. I bought the tivo form an ebay seller and it was seemingly last used with the standard Tivo Service and not configured for AltEpG.
My service number is 023-0000-6021-C325 if that helps.
I cannot seem to find out the Tivo's IP address as it is not showing up on my router when I connected it. I am with O2 and I have not adjusted any odf the settings on the router Which is a wireless box II) Have you any idea of how I should adjust my router address? I guess I would need to know Tivo's one first.
I don't think my router is set up as a DHCP server unless this is normal to be so.
Hope this makes things a little clearer.
Thanks :)

If it predates the AltEPG image it is unlikely to use DHCP, it is probably using a static IP address.

This link may help, although checking with the router manual first would be a good idea

Ask the ebay seller for the TiVo IP address, and also ask if it is setup for telnet and tivoweb. It is probably the easiest way to find out the info.

If the seller doesn't respond it is possible to find out by pulling the disk and examining it in a PC but if you are going that far I'd suggest you might as well update to the AltEPG image. I'm assuming as you just got the machine you don't have any recordings to keep.

DHCP is the norm for a router, but given what you have said I don't think the TiVo will be using DHCP.

hey,
The seller printed out the original installation instructions from TivoLand and it says to set it at:
IP 192.168.1.200
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1
Daily Call Dialup

I have tried to telnet the box (not that I know what i am doing) and I get nothing with these settings
I have opened up the tivo and it is a 2 disc model so not that easy to get a new altEPG image on to.
On the Tivo system info the network is set to :not set

Good - that makes sense. If you can change your router's IP address to 192.168.1.1 then it should work. I guess the reason you can't get telnet to work (from your PC?) is that your PC has got its IP address from the router and it's not on the same subnet.

I have tried to change the router settings and then restarted and then do telnet as it advises in the FAQ but it keeps saying it is not connected :0(

As already said you won't be able to telnet to the TiVo from your PC if there are on different subnets. If you can temporarily change the PC network settings you'll be able to do this.

First though it would be a good idea to know what PC settings you are currently using. What OS is your PC running and If possible can you run the command "ipconfig /all" on the PC and post the results here?

Well that's mystery. You should be able to telnet & ftp with those settings. The TiVo won't be able to make a daily call because the gateway is wrong (easily fixed if telnet was working.)

Are you sure that the cabling is correct. When you plug into the router is there a light that comes on to indicate that the cable is connected correctly?
