AltEPG

Hi,

I'm currently unable to connect my TiVo via dial-up. Having issues with our phone line, so that may well be the cause.

I have a network card installed, but haven't used it since migrating to AltEPG. Would someone mind pointing me at a post telling me the simplest way to tell my TiVo to call via the network instead on dial-up.

I also trying to install a second TiVo using an official AltEPG imaged drive from Tivoland, but the phone line is an issue again. I have a new Network card for this purpose. Do I make the same changes as for my up and running TiVo? Before attempting Guided Setup I need to ensure that the connection (phone or network) is correct using the Test Call option, so getting it correct on this second TiVo will be more crucial.

As far as I remember with an AltEPG image installed on the TiVo you simply connect the network card and TiVo will use the network instead of the modem/phone line without you needing to reconfigure it.

Yes - if you've got a drive from Tivoland then just plug it in and boot up. You should get 2 TiVo messages that will tell how your tivo has been configured and what its IP address is. This is quite different from your "existing" tivo which you'd have to configure manually (as per link above). Note that with two tivos you have to make sure they use different IP addresses *AND* different MAC addresses. The latest AltEPG image (1.0d) automatically uses a MAC address that's based on the tivo serial number but earlier versions had a fixed MAC address which you'd have to change by hand.

I vaguely remember using (probably) telnet years ago to swap between Network and Dial-Up by simply entering a menu command and then selecting a number (e.g. 1 for dial-up).

I wasn't very clear but both TiVo's have Tivoland purchased drives in them. I need to check but I’m fairly sure the first one I bought is running 1.0d; I think I purchased not long after that version was launched earlier this year.

The first TiVo has been running dial-up. What may I have done to ‘swap’ it from network to dial-up. The only thing I can imagine I did was to add one of the dial-up numbers. Could that be it? If so what should I do to reverse it. Must admit I thought I was running networked until our phone line started playing up and I discovered I was actually using dial-ip!!!

Does the fact I’m using Tivoland drives mean that in addition to be using allocated a unique id, AltEPG will also assign a unique IP address each time a TiVo reboots? How does it ensure the IP address is unique? What happens if a TiVo is temporarily disconnected from my router and the other TiVo is assigned the same IP address? Does this mean two TiVo’s attempt to use the same IP address? What are the implications?

By default an AltEPG Tivo will get its IP address via DHCP - ie issued by your router.
A leased IP will have a life of a few days, but with a small home network it is common for the same IP to be issued to the same device repeatedly. So a TiVo not being on the network for a period should not cause an issue as the IP may not have expired between connections. But if it has then on reconnecting a new IP will be issued and if the old IP has already been assigned to another device it wont be given back to the TiVo.

Ok thank-you for explaining that for me. Shouldn't be an issue then.

Going back to the link you provided me for a Network connection, on the basis that my TiVo is currently dial-up but using a Tivoland supplied AltEPG 1.0d drive, would i just need to follow this subset (the bold bits) of the instructions to convert to networked?

5. Once Tivo has rebooted goto system information page on Tivo
6. Scroll down so you can see Dial-in configuration code
7. On tivo remote press Clear, Clear, Enter, Enter, 0
8. On Tivo remote press 127 enter
9. Make the test call

Assuming that is correct, if I want/need to revert back to dialup at any stage what would I need to do?

If you have set a dialup number in the DialPrefix setting then your TiVo will use dialup for daily calls. Clear that out and it should revert to using the network.
