Changing back from Network to Dialup

Postby tonydav » Sun Jul 22, 2012 2:10 pm

I'll not bore you with how I reached this point, but:-

My existing Tivo - ( best £99's worth I ever bought, in 2002) gave up connecting to the Net for updates last Sunday (via the Tivo Heaven Cachecard I bought in 2008). Program Data runs out 25th July.

Can no longer connect to Tivo via FTP etc, so can't check for file corruption etc. so...

I'm trying to connect via dialup (using a One For All), as the easiest way round, but it doesn't dial out in spite of my changing the settings to 0161... etc.
I understand there are some remote control commands I may need to use to change the Dial-in Configuration Code - it's 000,TFA3 at present.

Can anyone tell me what the codes are, please, before this cheapskate pensioner reluctantly takes the plunge of ordering a VM Tivo?

Many thanks

If you have the official AltEPG software installed on your TiVo then the instructions here: http://www.altepg.com/networkConfiguration explain how to use the TiVo UI to change between network and dialup.

However I suspect you aren't running the official AltEPG software. You can confirm this by telling us what you did to get connected to the AltEPG service. If you followed this guide: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=480 then you are still using your old TiVo Heaven image, reconfigured to use AltEPG.

With the TiVo Heaven image, changing network configuration involves running the nic_config_tivo, either via telnet or by removing the hard disk. Does telnet work? ftp sometimes stops working but a reboot usually fixes it.

Network card failures are rare; I would suspect a problem with your network rather than the TiVo card failing.

Many thanks for your rapid response.

Yes, I should have made it clear, I'm still using the old TH image & from what I remember (it was several months ago), I used the guide to reconfigure it.

Until Sunday, I could telnet/ftp the tivo, plus the Tivo Client Alpha 10 connected ok. I had it set up as 192.168.1.200 but can no longer connect to it either by FTP or Telnet or TCA (My setup is a bit involved - VM Hub, Netgear Router & a couple of Netgear switches, plus two wireless extenders, as I have several PCs dotted around the house (sad, I know).

I suspected that the problem was unlikely to be hardware but, as my health is a bit iffy, I was trying to avoid grovelling about on the floor dragging out the Tivo & opening it up. Dial-up seemed a simpler way out.

Apologies if I'm talking rot (it happens, it's an age thing)

Many thanKs for your patience.

From what you say switching to dialup isn't a straightforward option unless you have left a serial bash prompt enabled (I do this on my networked TiVo just in case I ever lose network access). If you do have a serial bash prompt and a suitable lead you will be able to run nic_config_tivo that way.

If you don't have either serial or network access you need to open the TiVo and transfer the disk to a PC so you can reconfigure it to use dialup.

The easiest route is probably to try and get the network access going again, in which case you won't need dialup anyway. Try unplugging to TiVo and everything network related for a couple of minutes then switch it all back on. If that doesn't work try setting up a minimal network with just the TiVo and a PC on it. You'll need to manually configure the PC network address - try an ip address like 192.168.1.201 and a mask of 255.255.255.0. That should give you the best chance to telnet to 192.168.1.200 and gain access to the TiVo. If that works you can gradually try and rebuild your network until you find the problem.

Agreed, while it may seem simpler to go back to dialup temporarily, I don't think it is in this case without any bash prompt. It's one of the nice things about the AltEPG image.

Many thanks for your suggestions, I'll give them a go.

Two (ages 4 & 2) of the ten grandkids here for part of this week   , so may be a few days before I can have a try.

I'll be back (sounds familiar)
