Is there a way to get HD onto Tivo ?

Postby mikethebike » Wed Mar 02, 2016 8:27 am

I watch(ed) Aljazeera a lot.

They have now stopped using Channel 133 and point us to Channel 108, HD

Can this be done into a Tivo easily enough ?

Don't need HD quailty

As long as the stb you use can output a scart signal then you can record the channel in SD. The tricky bit is likely to be finding a suitable reliable stb that the TiVo can control.

I did this a while ago using a Humax HD-Fox T2 (not to be confused with the similar named HDR-Fox PVR). Unfortunately this died on me, probably due to psu capacitor failure which was common on this model. After the Humax died I also tried a cheap Tesco STBHDV2010 stb and while it sort of worked it locked up on an almost daily basis so wasn't really suitable. So I cannot really recommend either of these stb HD models for TiVo use.

Perhaps someone else can suggest a suitable HD stb?

Thanks

Shame my Sony box doesn't do HD

Can HD come down the aerial or do I need satellite ?

Top Google searches are Goodmans and Bush. I assume they are cheap and maybe not long lasting

Both the stb's I mentioned are for Freeview HD via an aerial.

I have no experience of either Goodmans or Bush Freeview HD stb's so cannot really comment on their suitability for use with a TiVo. If I had to guess I doubt either will be as reliable as your Sony - I eventually settled on that too and it has been rock solid.

How do I get a set top box not listed on Tivo to work ?

I now have a a Manhattan HD Box. Works fine connected via Scart to my TV.
Takes HD from the aerial as I have good enough signal strength

How can I get my Tivo to recognise it ?

Have a look at this thread viewtopic.php?f=8&t=514

I haven't tried this myself so I won't be of much help with any problems but maybe someone who has done this could step in and help. If you get it working please post the resulting script as I'm sure others would welcome it.

Edit: It is also worth trying the built in codes for other manufacturers if you haven't already done that. I found that my Tesco Technika box worked with codes for a Wharfdale box.

Thanks

Looks a bit beyond me and you need to be able to hack the Tivo. Will read again when at home

Is another box I can choose that would work anyone knows of ?

Had a look through the Tivo list and there are many of the newer HD models missing

Have you tried all the possible stb codes? You may find the Manhattan works with a Durabrand code, or one of the Freeview codes. (Hint - try 20072).

When you look in Set Top Box Control there are no entries for Manhattan. That box does however use the same Infra Red codes as some Durabrand boxes so you need to look under that name. You want to find the code listed as 20072 and try that. You will also find code 20072 listed under FREEVIEW (3 of 3).

Caveat - the 20072 code is there in the AltEPG CD software download. If you have an old TiVo that missed the later IR downloads, say because it was kept in the loft for years, 20072 may not be there.

If the set top box you are trying to use isn't in the list under its own name it is always worth trying every code from every manufacturer in the list. It takes a lot of time but you may get lucky. The FREEVIEW entries are a good place to start the search.

Google is a wonderful thing :)

Please post back in a couple of weeks to let people know how you are getting on. Is the Manhattan a good choice for TiVo use? Or does it often crash, miss channel changes etc. ? If it is a good box to use I'm sure others would appreciate knowing as there is a shortage of TiVo friendly boxes still on sale.

How did you ask the right question in Google to get that answer !
:)

Been in use a while now. Couple of issues.

Technology dripping out of the thing so read the manual before you use it seriously.

Default setting of 3 hours with no use and it turns itself off. I was able to get what missed this time.

Weird channel numbers coming up on the box.
Carefully press 1 on the Tivo remote and I get either 11 or 111 or even 1111.
Checking back on the programmes I had this started after the Tivo failed on me.
This happens every month or so.

While updating and recording at the same time the Tivo freezes.
I unplug the Tivo for it to come back and did this time.

So if this happens again I need to check my channel selection is working

Still to come.

Need to turn Manhattan off about every 2 weeks otherwise it doubles channel numbers set by remote, own or Tivo

Select channel 1
11 comes up

Select 24
Tries to go to 2244

Select channel 108
Tries to go to 110088
