EPG Switch Off - Already Happening?

Postby roger@rcaph.co.uk » Wed May 11, 2011 9:00 am

I just checked my TIVO to see when I have EPG to. The phone connection screen shows EPG data to 31st May. Go to Record By Channel and it won't let me select 1st June.

While TIVO have announced it will not be providing an EPG after 31st May, I was not sure if this would mean we would still get an EPG looking into the future on 31st May but no more EPG updates after then. It appears however that the EPG updates we are getting now are truncated at 31st May.

The upshot of this is, if the EPG replacement is not available until after 1st June, there will definitely be a hole in our guide data. On 28th May I will not be able to set a program to record on 2nd June. (Actually I will, but it would have to be set up as a manual recording).

Given this, is there no way the replacement EPG can be switched on early, e.g. w/e 28th May. I am sure that plenty of people wishing to keep their TIVO running would appreciate being able to make any necessary changes at a weekend rather than a Wednesday.

I have epg now for june 1st. So looks like it may continue to be supplied until 31 May.

That would give programme data till around June 21.

@Alek - Well my epg update on the normal tivo system today says that the programme data is up to and including June 2, but several hours later, there are no programmes shown for either 1st or second June. Can you see any actual programmes listed on yours ?

The main channels (used to be called "the terrestrial channels", but since the launch of DTT in 1998 that's been wrong as there are loads of terrestrial channels now!) have always had just the current week and the next full week's data. At or after a weekend depending on how slow Tribune are you'll have a full two week's data, but you don't get any more until the next weekend. You just get corrections.

For the other channels you get the full TiVo 3 weeks and there is no sign of the data ending on June 1st. This surprises me too! So perhaps June 1st is the date that we'll no longer be able to get data. If this happens we'll have data for some channels until June 21st!

This is a screenshot from my tivoweb module "guide data checker". I've been tweaking it for years and I note (with some irony) that there is a version of this in Tivoweb+ but whoever did it (without inviting me to contribute) removed all the graphics and made it a bit pants. :D Green dots mean data is available. So at the moment I've got the new set of guide data for BBC1, ITV, C4 and C5. BBC2/3/4's data is not ready yet and I expect it will be in tomorrow's download.

Is your Tivo still updating? Mine appears to be stuck and BBC1 only goes up to 28th May

The terrestrial channels download on a weekend, so data from 28th should appear this weekend.

My UK Tivo S1 gets its EPG data from Tivo's servers over the internet via my Cachecard and my "System Information" screen currently shows Programme Guide Data To Thursday 9 Jun 2011. That is in 21 days time from now (20th May 2011).

My last available EPG item to record is on Sky Channel 146 (CBS Action) on 9th June at 12.45am

Therefore I see no evidence at all that the existing EPG will not continue to update daily for up to 21 days ahead until at least June 1st with the last available program to record being just after midnight on June 21st or June 22nd on some channels.

That is if we are actually cut off at all................

Can you check for BBC1,2 etc on around 28th May 20:00 ??

The Other channels do have data after 28th, its just the principal terestrials that seem to be lacking

That is because the main terrestrial channels have only ever had EPG data for a maximum of 14 days that then counts down to 7 days before the next update. The update happens only once a week on the Saturday/Sunday daily call.

So my Tivo does currently only have data on BBC One until 28th May at present but this will extend by another week this weekend.

At the moment you are raising quite unnecessary fears about when the EPG data ends based on an inaccurate understanding of the basis on which the EPG data has always been provided by Tribune.

Sorry if I appeared short but it is just that I would have imagined that over many years of Tivo use people would have spotted that the main BBC, ITV, C4 channels etc only updated once a week on a Saturday or Sunday and only had between one and two weeks data at any point in time.

I am not sure if the AltEPG project will provide daily updates for two weeks ahead for these "terrestrial" channels instead of only weekly but I believe that sadly under the AltEPG we will only have a maximum of 14 days data in the EPG for any channel instead of the current 21.
