Aaaaaaaagh! Remote codes

I've been trying to figure out an alternative to getting a Pronto to capture remote codes so I can develop my integrated Freeview solution.

Got a Logitech Harmony remote so I could use their IR Analysis Centre but they seem to have got a serious attack of weborrhoea. Either they've take away functionality or the process has become so convoluted it defeats me.

Looked at various IR remote utilities that might be able to use easily available IR-USB adapters. Either the software had no facility to expose the hex codes or it only supported particular IR devices (which were either home-brew or not easily available in the UK).

So it looks like I'm stuck with getting a Pronto off of fleabay unless someone can help me out. I'm based in the Midlands near Coventry. Alternatively I could mail you the remote.

You can capture the codes from almost any remote using the TiVo itself and irSliceCreator. It does work because I did it a few days ago to capture the codes for a Technomate TCM-1500. It can be a bit fiddly and it took me a good couple of hours but my TiVo can now control the Technomate.

I did have to edit the irSliceCreator script because it was not killing a process which made it lock up after each button capture. I can show you the change I made if necessary. Also they mention a link that you might have to make (ln -s /var/tmp/serialPortArbitrator /var/tmp/SerialPortArbitrator) - you do have to do that on a UK TiVo.

Is your Freeview box on the Harmony database? If so I could capture the codes BUT I could not test them and also would not be able to test the frequency of the remote which is one of the required parameters so this is probably not worthwhile.

Ok, thanks for that. Using the Tivo looks nightmareishly complicated but I might give it a go if all the other methods fail.

As I already had a Palm I downloaded Omniremote and had a go with that. It wasn't able to detect the frequency the remote was using but I followed the process through anyway. Unfortunately it didn't work. I'll give it another go when I have time.

I've had a look on fleabay and a basic Pronto doesn't seem that expensive. I assume any model will do for the learning and export function? Anything I should watch out for / avoid?

OK, starting to really get pissed off.

Trying to follow the process documented at OzTivo.

Created the ircodes directory.
Copied over and unzipped the 2 utilities.
Etc.
Got to the 'Code Length' step.

Error:- "Failed to connect: no such file or directory."

Going to bed before I smash something!
