Unfortunately the serial connection won't allow that sort of access without making script changes to your TiVo's disc. To do that you must install it in a PC. If you're doing that you might as well install the network drivers (which also enables serial as a side-effect). (Network drivers only came pre-installed from version 3 of S1 software so they're not in 2.5.5.)

So you will need to:
1) put the tivo disc in a pc and install the network drivers
2) attach the network card
3) use telnet to access the tivo and make a 1-line edit to /tvlib/tcl/tv/AddrUK.itcl

You're now on AltEPG via network.
Job done.

Previously people have always claimed there were no significant improvements in functionality in the V3 software only distributed to US Tivos compared to the UK v2.5.5. Clearly they were not telling the truth.

V3 "firebolt" was mostly a "behind the scenes" update with very little visible UI change,
aimed at syncing the codebase of S1 and S2 tivos.

Sort the now playing list
Faster operation of menus.
Ability to turn off the 28 day rule on a per SP basis
Suggestions were improved (I think this is when they started uploading thumbs to server, and sending thumbs down on daily call).
Network drivers included (turbonet -not of course cachecard as that wasn't designed yet)
Moved a lot of code from TCL (nice and editable, but slow) to faster compiled C++ - (unhackable!) - including tclient stuff !

These are the only dial-up settings you'll ever need:
Set Your Computer to Dial: 0845 604 3090
With Username: Anything
And Password: Anything

If you edit /etc/tclientUK.conf (via serial or by pulling the disk) to change the IP address that tivo tries to connect to and put in this phone number, that might just work.

Tried /am trying that here:

viewtopic.php?f=16&t=596

..not successfully though, as it needs something else - not sure if tivo supports PAP

I thought people said something an about it needing an unauthenticated PPP session?

Is this old Tivo Underground post any possible help?

An unmodified Tivo won't do PPP but it might do straight serial access. I haven't tried this with an unmodified Tivo but these steps might work:

  • Create a serial cable to connect the tivo to your PC serial port.
  • Run a terminal emulator on the PC, set for 9600 8N1
  • Power up the tivo and hit return on the PC several times. See if you can get a password prompt. If the Tivo boots you have missed it.
  • Use the password "factory".
  • Use the menu to change the boot parameters to add: shondss=true
  • Boot and see if you get a shell.
  • If so, you will need to do "stty sane" to see what you are typing, and ^C does not work. But rz does, to allow you to use zmodem to transfer files (such as an editor, with which you can begin to make whatever changes you need).

Do NOT try this unless you know what you are doing at a Linux root command prompt!

IIRC that works with 1.5.2 but not 2.5.5. But it's all a long time ago now!

Unfortunately, serial access to bash prompt won't work without editing your rc.sysinit first

(you need to add the line "/bin/bash </dev/ttyS3 >& /dev/ttyS3 &")

Like your optimism but your assuming people find out about the altepg. How is that going to happen? Not everyone follows the internet forums, the people with unmodded monthly sub tivo's are probably the least likely to.

I think a lot more people browse the Tivocommunity forum without posting than anyone actually realises.

However whether I am right or not depends on whether there will ever be enough dialup capacity with the AltEPG to handle the potential number of users. If there isn't then people will start to get fed up (ungrateful of them I know as they aren't paying anything but when they had a daily dialup before that just worked that is inevitably going to be how people will start to feel as the main point of a Tivo is its effortless reliability) and start buying other PVRs.

The only people left using TiVos are ones that would have to be dissuaded with a stick with a nail though it. Dedicated doesn't begin to cover it.

But it can be equally dangerous to have a mentality that just because something is produced by volunteers people should be happy with any old level of service that the volunteers feel like delivering.

For instance no one would accept the St Johns Ambulance Service if it were to be operated on that basis.
