No Audio on Live TV with Sony VTX-D800

Postby ichilton » Fri Jun 10, 2011 7:29 am

Hi,

My father-in-law has been using his Tivo with just ariel but has recently purchased a Sony VTX-D800 Freeview receiver as recommended in another thread on the forum in order to use AltEPG now the service has been turned off in the UK.

I've just been setting this up for him and the Freeview box is working fine when hitting AUX on the Tivo remote but when pressing Live TV, you only get the picture and no sound.

The IR control is also working fine - it's just no sound.

I also tried doing a quick recording and there is no sound on the recording either.

The cables are in correctly as I get the menu bing's from Tivo and the sound works fine from Freeview when I hit AUX.

Any ideas?

Could it be something to do with plugging it into a really old, small CRT TV in my office?

Thanks,

Ian

Have you tried a 'cold' reboot? (Pull the tivo's mains plug, count to 4 elephants, plug back in).

Hi,

Yes, I turned everything off over night and tried it again this morning and the same problem was there.

Thanks,

Ian

PS: Love the 4 elephant reference!!

Try a warm reboot, ie restart from the Tivo menu.

There can be a problem where it doesn't start the audio hardware properly first time it starts, due to too much demand on the power supply. Restarting from the menu doesn't have as much initial demand on the power supply so can help it.

Aha - that fixed it, thanks!

Will replacing the power supply help at all? - we have 3 new ones stashed away somewhere.

Odd that we've not had that problem before!

Thanks,

Ian

Read somewhere on here or tivo community forum that it's a common occurrence when you fit a cachecard and a warm reboot fixes it. Same thread said a new power supply may or may not fix it. You can also tweak the power on the 5V rail or something but not sure how to do that.

There's also a script which checks the logs to see if the audio chip initialised properly on bootup, and if it didn't it does a warm reboot. To save you the bother of repeatedly rebooting manually. A search should find it.

Ah, he does have a cachecard fitted.

I'll take a look at that script.

Thanks,
