Save TiVos from the Skip !

Postby spitfires » Wed Feb 16, 2011 11:26 am

One thing I think we musn't allow to happen is for any Tivos to end up in the dump. After all there aren't any more of them being made!

It occurs to me that peeps selling them on fleece-u-bay will probably skip them if they don't get any bids, so I will put in a "catch" bid on all the cheap ones I can. I can't do all of them (I can't afford much) but it will help with some of them.

Other ways we might be able to "hoover up" redundant Tivos is by placing wanted ads in your local Freecycle website / FreeAds / Loot / whatever. Try to not pay any money for them (!) but just make sure they aren't lost forever.

I guess this is mostly an issue nearer to May 31st but I think we should be on the lookout from now onwards.

Once our replacement service is running then hopefully we can sell them on and recover the cost.

p.s. did anybody else chuckle at the "June 1st" date? What they *really* mean is that the service will shut at midnight on May 31st, but "June" sounds soooo much better (further away) than "May".

It's the old £9.99 is not £10, marketing ploy!

Just have to second this!!

If you are not already members of your local freegle / freecycle groups, join up NOW and start posting wanted ads !! You'll have to collect them, but payments are not allowed.

How are you going to co-ordinate this? I think that you'll need to otherwise you'll be bidding against each other!

I'll only bid the minimum opening price - I don't actually want to win it! If anyone bids higher then I assume they actually want to win the Tivo and I'll let them!

The issue is to stop the seller having a box they no longer want and will therefore skip if they get no bids at all.

To give a bit of encouragement, I picked up a lifetime working unit from freecycle in 2007, so you never know what you might find...

No TiVo Left Behind

Postby Ant » Thu Feb 17, 2011 6:15 pm

Absolutely. There were something like 35,000 UK TiVos made. It would be nice to think that we could rescue some/all of them, refurbish and restore them to their former glories.

No TiVo Left Behind! :)

A friend on Cix has one in Dorset if anyone wants it:
-------------
Does anyone want our old tivo, they are welcome to it free, the only
problem is one of carriage.

The unit works perfectly and has been a great piece of kit, we now have
alternative arrangements.

Local pick up would be good, as packing it all up and lugging it to the
post office would be a pain.

Trouble is I live in Dorchester Dorset.

Drop me a mail to jezza@cix.co.uk or jerry.jones@gmail.com and I'll put you in touch if you're interested

He is happy for you to contact him and says:

Remembering that I'm not particularly happy about parcelling it up and
carrying it to the post office as the post office is a fair walk away.

Collection would be better but bearing in mind I'm in West Dorset.

If he's around during the day, parcel2go.com are cheaper than the post office and will collect from your house! :)

Is it possible for an admin to munge that email address to foil the spam bots? Perhaps phpBB has a function that can be turned on to do it automatically?

I have a spare tivo for free, I rescued it from the kerb 2 years ago and never used it since I don't have a TV licence.
It powers up so I managed to watch some recordings from it using a remote I sold with the other abandoned box. It has unlimited subscription.

There are no cables or remote.

Location: Hackney, I'm planning a drive to south Manchester in 2 weeks.

Any takers?
