I use YAC on my TiVo combined with a modem connected to my PC which supports caller ID. It works very well, it's brilliant, and it is yet another thing that I will lose when eventually I move to something that records HD
, but I warn you right now, it was difficult to set up.
You will need:
1. A PC running Win XP or below. By default, the Windows callerID system is broken for the UK so you have to fix it as described here:
http://archive.tivocommunity.com/tivo-v ... ost13001962. A modem which supports UK caller ID. I have a US Robotics 56k 5630B fax modem.
56k Professional Message Modem External #245625-01
http://www.modem-help.co.uk/mfc/usr.html#012225(also 015625-00, 015625-01, 81-015625-01 - UK - but probably not caller Id on these)
56K (Sportster) Message Modem #245668-01 (probably 015668-01)
(015668-00, 015668-01, 81-015668-01 - UK
The 015668-01 (possibly) is (was?) one of the very few modems which enables UK Caller ID.
56K V.92 Faxmodem External #64-245630-04 [and 245630-01] (USR015630B)
(245630 56K V.92 Faxmodem External - UK
5630-UKDS 56K Faxmodem External - UK
USR015630B 56K V.92 Faxmodem External - UK
The 64-245630-04 (part number USR015630B) is one of the very few modems which enables UK Caller ID - see this post.)
http://groups.google.com/groups?dq=&hl= ... %26hl%3Denhttp://www.usr-emea.com/loc-unkg/modem_ ... Manual.pdf3. Check the firmware on the modem. Firmware that came with mine was rev. 11.15.19. I did not reflash to a later version.
I did however update the driver to the one from 12th August 2005 (6.2.5.3). Then it worked.
4. YAC running on TiVo and PC.
http://archive.tivocommunity.com/tivo-v ... ost13028565. The PC left running during all waking hours to grap the caller ID from incoming calls. This is not a problem for me, but may cause tensions in some households.
On the TiVo YAC pops up number and name, when the phone rings. It's brilliant.
There are two extra things you can do, the 2nd one everyone can do:
a) On the PC, run Phonetray Free (
www.phonetray.com) which sits alongside YAC. (Windows broadcasts "the phone is ringing" messages to all applications which can handle it, in this case YAC and Phonetray. You can then set up blocklists to prevent certain callers getting through and log all incoming call numbers/names which I find very useful. Particularly satisfying is being able to block with wildcards, eg all 0843 numbers, and you can play different WAV files when different numbers ring. It can also rather than ignore these calls, answer them and then hang up after 5 seconds, so they they got charged for the call.
b) On the PC, run PopTray.
This doesn't need a caller ID modem. This monitors incoming emails rather than phonecalls. When an email arrives it can talk to YAC, and therefore the TiVo, to display on the TV the incoming email From / Subject (however you set it up).
