CacheCard/TurboNet card Requirements

Postby Brother52 » Thu Apr 07, 2011 8:15 am

Having recently picked up a spare TiVo for testing, I'd ideally like to get it networked...

Has anyone got an unwanted CacheCard (preferred) or Turbo(NZ)Net card going spare/for sale?

(Apologies if this isn't the best place to post - feel free to move!)

Unfortunately I can't help. I'm on the look out for one too (if anyone knows of any going spare/for sale, please PM me).

Thanks

CacheCard/TurboNet card Requirements

Postby healeydave » Thu Apr 07, 2011 1:09 pm

I'm in the process of sourcing some more TurboNet cards, I don't know how much they will come out at, but they will be a lot cheaper than the cache cards (which I think are less necessary these days).
Again, the last decent source was Australia and the exchange rate is not great, so this is a pure estimate but I think they are likely to come out around £40-45.
Thats based on a reasonable shipping cost and not getting clobbered at customs!

If your interested, leave a message in this thread and include a quantity if you want more than 1 card.

Cheers.
Dave.

Can I ask why you think the CacheCard isn't that necessary any more?

IIRC there was a huge speed increase on my main TiVo when I added a CacheCard - especially when creating/editing Season Passes etc.

^ A cachecard works out at about £90-95 ! I'll put up with slightly slower menus I think ;)

I would be interested in (one) card if you can source them at around £40

Thanks

Dave - I would also be interested to know why you think the CacheCards are "less necessary these days"?

Surely there is going to be just as much programme data to manipulate (possibly even more if the new EPG provides more than 14 days of advance programme data?), so isn't the CacheCard just as worthwhile as it's always been? Doesn't it just provide caching of the TiVo's EPG database so speeding up db queries and hence overall performance of the menu system and especially say Season Pass manipulation (which even with a CacheCard results in a relatively long "Please wait...")?

Why will a CacheCard be any less useful/important with the new EPG?

I probably didn't word that too well, if you have a lot of season passes and wish lists and have experienced a noticeable difference in speed from having a cachecard with memory installed, thats not going to change and it will still be necessary.

Hi All

Have been dipping in and out of the forum - so excuse me if I've missed out on something important.............but is the word in the wind now that to utilise the new EPG "system" that otheres greater than me are beavering away compiling that we will need to purchase some form of network card? If so, looks like I'll need 3! - The cheap ones please !!

It looks like there will not be a *need* - dial-up will be available and has been tested as working. However, unless something unexpected turns up, the calls will no longer be on a freephone number. Depending on your telephone calls package, this may be an additional cost that in the long term makes a network card even more attractive than it already is!

Probably 3 needed here. I have one tivo with a cachecard fitted which I presume doesn't have a network connection [it's been 3 years since I fitted it]. I have 2 more with nothing fitted. Ideally I'd like cards that have the cache + network like those on the Tivoland site at £89. Are these still available?

All this presumes that this will be the way to get the new EPG. I haven't been able to find out if this will be the case. Network card or a new drive image?

As you'll appreciate, the replacement is still being developed so there is no definitive answer at this stage.

We're hoping to be able to switch to the new epg via a software download over dial-up. If this works then neither a network card nor a new hard drive are 'required'.

However, you may choose to get a network card to take advantage of the wonderful world of TivoWeb ;) and/or replace a 10 year old disc (they had an expected service life of 3 years so you're on borrowed time now!!)
