What happens if final+1 call to Tivo gets "Account closed"?

Postby philg » Tue May 24, 2011 10:39 am

I know this is a hypothetical question, but I was intending to leave my Tivo "connected" to Tivo inc until I'm about all out of guide data

But what if the call after the "final call" changes my account to "Closed"? What does that do to my current:

- Pending recordings (ToDo)
- Current recordings (Now Playing)

Or am I better off, assuming I haven't transitioned to the new ALT-EPG by then, adding another dial-in config which will be guaranteed to fail (such as misquoting the userid or password)??

Ideally I'd like my Tivo just to continue after June 1st with a failed daily call, but to also continue to work through the ToDo list until such time as I get around to activating the dial-in to ALT-EPG...

Anyone?

This is something that I've been wodnering and surprised its not been answered :?

I'm really concerned as I'm not going to be able to get to my mums machine for a week or so at least and need to know if I should get her to either let it make its "last" call to the mothership OR tell her to unplug 24hrs before hand, she like me has plenty of EPG well into June and thus gives me some breathing space to attempt to get the AltEPG running vai freesat on a eleventy billion mile away sat dish down the garden somewhere as Analogue isnt supported on the AltEPG.

Dave "hinted" about "something" on the otherside but apparently cant say :(

I've e-mailed TiVo Support and got the standard auto reply back and suspect that will be all.

Just need to know really..........leave connected or not leave connected ....... that is the question ..........but what is the answer :?:

Surely, disconnect early, as apart from one extra days worth of EPG, what's the downside!?

The "downside" for me is that I connect via the net - if I disconnect my Tivo from my LAN, I can no longer get in with Tivoweb/Telnet/FTP either

Which is why I was pondering the idea of giving it an invalid dialin configuration - that (I hope) would only cause the daily call to fail - leaving Tivo to it's own devices until the EPG ran out

What happens if TiVo "release" the series one to make it a manual recorder, they potentially could send a last update to make the units available for manual recording, unlikely I know BUT if they did and I missed it then it would be a bit of a bummer until I got my act together with a altEPG.

If you are currently getting EPG over the network then all you have to do is to set am invalid gateway address. You'll still be able to telnet to the TiVo, copy programmes using tserver/tyTool and use TiVoWeb/TiVoWebPlus locally.

But doesn't that require a restart (to both set and then reset)?

OK, now I am confused

I set up a new dialin config of

128:8450885336:194.1.151.205:80:ppptcd:xxxxxxxx

Note "MtDubois" has changed to "xxxxxxxx"

I expected the test call to fail - BUT IT DIDN'T

I received account status 4 (Tivo internal testing) again

I was trying to set up a configuration that was guaranteed to fail so it'd be easy to switch between Tivo inc / Alt EPG / Nothing without repeated restarts

I guess I could try a different IP address or port, but I'd love to know why what I tried still succeeded??

Thanks

There is NO authentication from a dialup/ppp point of view

If restart=reboot (or power cycle) then yes. Is that a problem?

In particular, there is no authentication on the HTTP access used to actually download the data. So, if you are using a network card, the password is not used at all (you could change the IP address if you want it fail -- you can always use 0.0.0.0).

If you are using dialup, the password may or may not be used depending on which dialup you are using.

Only in the sense it's a lot more effort than a simple dialin config change (especially as I have one of those Tivos that occasionally restarts without sound!)

You could leave your net active and get your router to re route tivo server addr to say your local host.

philg wrote:OK, this is better

Note port 800 instead of 80 :)

Now the test call gets "number unavailable" so I can toggle between:

Tivo inc (dialin config 000)
Alt EPG (dialin config 127)
No dialout (dialin config 128)

So, for those of you who have followed my thinking, I'll stick with Tivo inc until May 31st

THEN "turn off" daily calls and let Tivo work through most of the post June 1st EPG (and until I can get around to redoing guided setup)

Finally, in early June I can enable daily calls to Alt-EPG

Still feels a little too simple though - I'm kind of waiting for the "other shoe" to drop.....

I heartily recommend mikerr's no sound script - mine had this issue and once installed I never noticed the problem again.
I eventually replaced the PSU - I believe that a tweak on the existing one can also cure the problem but the script was a simple fix without opening the case.
