Who is stuck with analogue only (no Freeview)?

Postby poppadum » Sat May 28, 2011 2:28 pm

A couple of people have posted recently that they only get analogue terrestrial and won't be able to get Freeview until digital switchover comes to their region. Initially we made the decision not to support analogue because we are so close to digital switchover now anyway. However, it may be possible to support a small number of users who can't receive any form of digital TV until switchover.

So if you're one of the users who cannot receive digital please register your interest here. We'd like to know:
  • what region you're in
  • the transmitter your aerial points at, if you know, or your postcode if you don't
  • what channel numbers the five analogue stations are on (not all regions get CH5)
Please note that we can't make any promises at this stage; we just wanted to guage how many users this issue affects. Any solution will be analogue only: we don't intend to support any form of analogue + digital configuration (e.g. aerial + sky).

edit: We have now got a solution working to support users who can only receive analogue terrestrial (what Tivo calls Aerial only).

To hopefully add a bit of insight, it is likely those affected are on relay transmitters. Those are not getting done until the actual Freeview switchover dates for the region. The main transmitters for the region may have been broadcasting Freeview for a while. My village's relay transmitter didn't get Freeview until the day of the North-West England (Granada) switchover.
6023 - was 40GB - upgraded to cachecard and 250gb
6021 - was 40GB - upgraded to 120gb and Turbonet - further upgraded to 250gb still with Turbonet
6020 - was 40GB - for dev work - currently running a 500GB Samsung HM500JI and a TurboNZet

We don't have Freeview yet and won't until they change the Guildford transmitter in April 2012. However we do have Freesat so as long as that is supported (Bush SD boxes) we should be ok

I know you're in a bit of a hole (in the ground!) in Guildford but can you not get the test FV transmissions from Hannington or perhaps more likely from Crystal Palace? You might need a mast-head amplifier but you should be able to get something from CP.

Oh pop's if you can support a analogue or two you'll make my mum a really happy mum 8)

Been looking at trying figure out how to fix the issue with some sort of FreeSat but the cable lengths involved are massive due to her cottage being listed (not allowed to bung a dish on it) and trees in the garden etc making it look almost impossible :roll:

She only gets the 4 stations, I dont know the RF channels but can find out.

But the transmitter is this I think http://www.ukfree.tv/shutdowndetail.php?tx=SY972821

If you need further info just shout

For Corfe Castle local relay that would be
BBC-1 UHF 51
BBC-2 UHF 44
ITC-1 UHF 41
C-4 UHF 47

Me too, and fitting a dish will be a real pain, had hoped to avoid it.

I barely get Freeview and would hugely appreciate the addition of Analogue for the next few months until switchover.

I think I'm on the Sudbury transmitter, although there may be a more local relay (I'm Ipswich-based).
BBC1=51
BBC2=44
ITV1=41
C4=47
C5=35

Cheers,

Ian

OK, that's two people (verses and Furbag's mum) with the same channel numberings, so can we use you as guinea pigs to see if the idea is going to work? If you're agreeable, could you PM me your tivo service number(s) and we'll give it a go.

I live in Milton Keynes which is served by an analogue cable system which provides the basic analogue channels. It has been owned by many outfits over the years but is now part of Virgin Media. This area went digital in April, heard nothing from VM but low and behold they seem to have continued providing a service. I guess they are rebroadcasting the digital or sat feeds (teletext has gone, so that is a clue).

I only use the tivo for these channels (have sky+) and so was disappointed by the decision to not support RF channels. I had resigned myself to having to investigate myself once the official service has stopped (I have ordered a new disc & network card). Surely there must be table/database somewhere which equates channels to stations, I am quite happy to have to hack a few files (once I get my disc etc.) rather than expect GS to know all the post codes etc - I can configure the tivo as 'RF+Sky' so it download the EPG covering those channels.

Current channels on my tivo are:
Ch 24 ITV Central
Ch 26 BBC News (I don't find the need to record this)
Ch 28 ITV Anglia
Ch 30 BBC2
Ch 32 Channel 4
Ch 34 BBC1East
Ch 38 Channel 5

Grateful for any help on this.

Dave, am I right in assuming this works just like an incoming aerial feed, and tivo tunes the stations without sending remote codes to an external set top box? If so, we may be able to support it by pretending it's an analog-only lineup.
