Tivo Inc. announces end of official EPG service June 2011

Many people still use Series 1 Tivo's in the UK's and it is no surprise that this announcement today has created a flurry of concerns.

It has to be remembered that significant portions of the UK are unable to take advantage of a Virgin Media offering and hence will be left high & dry by this decision.

A number of hard-core users have expressed an interest in an alternative community driven EPG service to take over after June.

This has been done before in other countries that have/had no Tivo service. These countries include Australia, Canada and the Netherlands and now (unless your one of the lucky few that live in a Cable area), the UK :-)

Due to restrictions on the tivocommunity forums, I have volunteered this forum (my original customer support forum) as a base to discuss this project.

Does anybody have any thoughts on the fact that Tivo sold many of us licences to the EPG service for life (of the machine)? Can they just abandon this?

I'm no lawyer, but others have suggested there is a clause regarding them only needing to provide the data as long as the service is in operation and that they are able to suspend the service :-(

We have to face the problem.
I am sure tivo inc have a team of legal eagles that have found loopholes.
The agreement is almost certainly worthless as are the people running tivo inc.
I am a retired computer programmer unix aware.
I don't have much hardware knowledge.
I am certain that we could use either sky or freeview EPG.
If a few of us pooled our knowledge I am sure the promlem could be solved.

Alternatively for £100 quid dump the tivo and buy a freeview+ box.

I must admit the 2nd option offers more with the advent of HD.

Its just why should we let them get out of our "LIFETIME"sic agreement.

It's not a case of loopholes - the Agreement clearly states it can be cancelled at 30 days notice for no reason. It is and always has been a 30-day rolling contract - doesn't matter whether you have "Lifetime" sub or not.

This is why many of us didn't take out the Lifetime but went for the TAM.

Thanks for letting us use your forum. I have enjoyed my Tivo since 2002. It is disappointing to see the end of Tivo UK support. It would be great if we could replicate the EPG database service and make it available via internet (after June).

Even though I had/have a lifetime sub (since 2002), I suspect many of us would be willing to pay a small fee in return for ongoing EPG service....even if all it really does is pay for the server/maintenance costs.

I agree with many others: The Tivo user interface is the best. You would have thought that all subsequent PVRs would have built their interface to be at least the equal of Tivo. Not so.

Anyway, this could be fun!

I have 3 "lifetime" subbed Tivo s and am in a Virgin area, but it would be nice to keep them going with an alternative sub of some sort.
