Unmodified Tivos can now connect to AltEPG via 60 new lines

Postby jamie.easterman » Mon Jun 20, 2011 7:18 pm

I am pleased to announce that we have added 0845 0800300 to the list of dialup numbers that supports the AltEPG project (There are currently 60 lines available for this purpose). This dialup number will allow an unhacked Tivo as well as AltEPG images with a modem to retreive guide data from AltEPG's server.

Follow the instructions on the link below but replace the Dial Prefix with 08450800300.

Thanks for everyone's help in keeping my mum's Tivo alive ;-)

So you won't mind me advertising this number everywhere now (on twitter & TC) ?
-you did say keep the number quiet earlier on during testing...

I haven't done so for the (single) 01274 number simply because it's already massively oversubscribed - 60 lines is much more headroom.

Oh, and don't be shy about advertising your firm - do you have a website and logo I can link to ?

What is the AltEPG team's official position regarding these 0845 numbers, please? Are they a temparary stopgap to help with the 01274 over-usage, or a permanent alternative to the 0161 number once the service is finally tested and up-and-running?

there can never be too many lines :)

Exa's lines will go live around 27th, and will also have an 0161 as well as an 0845 alternative, we will also be opening up our dialup pool so the choice is yours to make.

I suspect the main choice is 0845 or 0161, which will depend on peoples call plans - note 0845 does usually generate revenue albeit rather small for the operators.

We will leave the 01274 number for now

I think we all want the same thing, for the TiVo's to continue, it is certainly not a financial motivation. I am the only person at Exa with a TiVo and mine is networked. I do have a relative on dialup.

:) TiVo Forever :) - and a big thanks to all the core altepg team - you are appreciated

Thanks, tivomas. Just trying to get a picture for when the the old EPG finally dies, which is presumably inevitable.

Hi Mike and the rest of you Tivo diehards out there.

Sorry I couldnt tell if that was sarcasm. I know how user communities can be sensitive to any form of commercial promotion. Seriously I did this for my mum (she's very happy this morning as her Tivo is now working again!) I'm fairly sure our dialup system can take a bit of a pounding. It's been around since we started the business providing commercial dialup services in 96 but dialup has been in decline these days as many of our clients have migrated to DSL services etc, however believe it or not we still have customers paying us monthly subscriptions for Plain Old Dial Up !

I'm fairly sure we would be happy to promote our 0845 number more if it passes muster in the next few hours of testing. But feedback so far has been good.

Anyway if you're interested I run an ISP called London Web http://londonweb.net which I started in 96. We provide many different services including business class Internet Provision, Secure Web Hosting , IT Support and Mobility solutions. We are happy to continue to provide these lines for Tivo users. Of course the more lines the merrier (we dont really have an idea of how many Tivos are out there. Does anyone ? ) and yes there is some small contribution we get from an 0845 line to go towards the electricity, engineers and bandwidth but it wouldnt buy me lunch every day I can assure you.

Everyone! thanks for your help in keeping some wicked tech alive.

Cheers

This is so fantastic that TIVO lives on. Well done and thank you to everyone involved....

I am catching up here, so please forgive my basic question.

I am on an unlimited phone plan with my telco provider, so calls to 0161 would be free. However they charge for 0845 numbers - 12p connection plus 6p per minute

Is the plan for AltEPG to provide multiple lines via 0161 as well as 0845, and when should I make the switch on my dial up settings?

Having an extra 60 lines should really solve the immediate problem.

Can anyone shed any light on the cost of dialing this new 0845 number?

@professional the cost has been discussed here at length http://www.tivoland.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=669&p=5934#p5934 ... it depends on your phone provider.

Many Thanks Jamie! :)

Any chance that you will be able to force close any call that lasts longer than 2 hours, like the Exa lines (when they arrive)?

Cheers,

Matt.

yeah no problem I was already working on it and should be in place later today. Not that we've had a call lasting more than 2 hours yet. But as they say better safe than a wacking great bill from BT !

Are these lines no longer available or are they just being hammered at the moment (12 midday 25/6/11) due to Tivo finally pulling the plug on the dial-up EPG?
