Why does it matter whether a box is reactivated as a Status 5 or 4 unit when official Tivo service no longer exists. I agree that it would have been highly unethical to have released a script that changed an account closed box to Lifetime Service in the days when Tivo was still charging some UK Tivo owners £10 per month for Tivo service.

Or thinking further is your worry that this script might still be misused by some Tivo S1 owners living on the other side of the pond who still have to pay for monthly Tivo service? Clearly it is unwise for the AltEPG project to be seen to doing anything that could deprive Tivo Inc of revenue.

I feel it's only fair to point out I did not write this script - it came from the dealdatabase forum.

Yes, that would be fair wouldn't it. It's also fair to point out how easy it is to change a "5" to a "4" in the script, too.

Does setting it at '4' keep tivoweb running ok?

I hadn't thought of that. Since Status 4 Tivos presumably wouldn't actually be able to access any data on the normal Freephone dialup number (when it was stiill working) then I suppose lightn (the creator of tivoweb) wouldn't have seen them as a potential service theft risk unlike Tivos with a faked Status 5 Lifetime setting.

Can I presume that is also why AltEPG is setting all its Tivos to Status 4 and not Status 5 in order to avoid raising blood pressure anywhere at Tivo Inc about assisting possible service theft on S1 Tivos across the pond.

Yes. It doesn't matter whether you use a test call to the altEPG to set your service status to 4, or the script.

Where did I say it mattered? Status 4 bypasses TiVowebs checks that it does when you've run fixsub, and 5 doesn't. It's been discussed at length since last Friday. You said you had an inquisitive and journalistic mind, yet you didn't work that out :(

You're agreeing with something that I did not write. What are you talking about? The script was released many years ago. The internet is a lot bigger than one tivocommunity website.

Pete77 wrote:Or thinking further is your worry

Third time. Where did I say I was worried? I said I have respect for lightn and the other tivoweb authors.

Another non sequitur,

Kindly stop implying that I wrote what I didn't write - 4 times in a single posting is despicable, even for you.

mrtickle,

I intended no slight in any part of my previous post but you chose to derive it in numerous different ways.

So clearly our minds seem to work in totally opposite fashions (pure scientist as opposed to pure social scientist strikes me as the most likely reason for the repeated chalk and cheese like clashes) and it is highly unlikely we will therefore ever agree on almost anything.

No. You replied to things I didn't say instead of the things I did say, and I called you on it that's all.

That is clearly the difference between the way a scientist's and a social scientist's minds can work when interpreting what superficially may appear to be precisely the same set of words.

Those of a social science or journalistic or political background are frequently used to reading between the lines of what people actually write but clearly to the scientist with their bunsen burner and notepad this appears to be an almost unheard of process.

No - it has more to do with the aggressive and accusatory way you phrase things.

You, as someone who claims to have a journalistic mentality, should know better and understand that the written word (and especially the informal written word such as appears on these forums) can easily be interpreted in a different manner or tone from that which the author intended. Therefore I would expect you to take more care that your posts could not be interpreted in a way other than you intend - but you don't. Hence you wind people up with your perceived arrogant and condescending tone (as illustrated by your last post).

If you took a breath before pressing the "Submit" button and stopped for just one minute to read your own post to see if it could be misinterpreted, then you would avoid a lot of animosity and umbrage and these forums would be a much nicer place.

You totally miss the point. As per usual.

According to you I am one of those with a scientific techie mind who can't be expected to understand the written word. You on the other hand claim to be "journalistic" and therefore have a responsibility to ensure you are not misunderstood. Yet you clearly don't.

In fact if you genuinely believe that scientific types have difficulty understanding things then surely you should take even more care in your writing, so as to help we poor saps.
