Not clever - just reasoned.

Go back to using the network - if you aren't sure what you have and haven't changed - reimage the disk for transparency. Then try a C&D, followed by a GS - but change provider lineup. Doesn't matter what to - deselect all, then select a single channel and try the call.

If that works, repeat, using your real provider lineup, and again, deselect all, followed by selecting a single channel. Once this succeeds (fingers crossed), then you can add channels back (via TWP is lightning fast).

If the first step fails, (I know this is a pain) see if you can take your TiVo to a mate's house. This will determine if it is something on your home network which is causing the issue. This setup method, works with 99% of all known TiVos with the AltEPG iso - so the only other possibility is that something on your network is causing an issue, or your isp is causing it (blocking ports?).

Ok, I'll see what I can do tonight.

I'm using the network, and I've just re-imaged the disk, haven't changed anything - have just been trying Daily Calls.

I did a Clear & Delete before, but maybe I had done other things in the interim, I'll see how it goes.

Bear in mind that I'm blaming you if I have to pull the disk again ;)

Ok, before you try SolidTechie's tips, give this a quick try:

Download this tcl file and upload it to the tivo, doesn't matter much where, e.g. "/tmp" or "/hack/bin" and run the file.
Cold start the tivo, this should clear out and temporary files.
Re-try connecting.

Hokey m'dokey

Will do that this evening.

Thanks for the help guys, I really do appreciate it. I know how frustrating it can be to try and diagnose problems remotely without the kind of information you take for granted, having to do it on a regular basis with my parents.

If this doesn't work, I do have the ability to give someone remote access to my TiVo over the network if that would help.

and the network thing still puzzles me.

I totally accept that the network connection can be messed up in a myriad of ways, I could have screwed up all kinds of settings, my router could be a problem , my ISP might be particularly awkward, lots of things. Network diagnostics is a whole industry to itself, I'm something of a geek and I appreciate the complexity.

But when I go back to dialup, where the network is eliminated - the same issue.

It also looks to me, like it's decided to stop using the emulator again.

Code: Select all
07/01:22:29:33: /tvbin/TClient:  Executing HTTP command: /tvbin/http_post /var/log/svclog http://194.1.151.205:80/tivo-service/mlog.cgi OFF OFF ON

I'm feeling your pain, but don't know how to advise you.

I can only re-itterate - if it were me, I'd pop round to my mate's house & try again. If it works there - then the problem is in/on your network. If it doesn't, then over to the boffins...

I suppose, you could try (first) unplugging everything else from the router, and plugging the TiVo directly into it... or change the router even

I'm still not understanding why the dialup is affected.

hi worm, i'm rather late to the discussion but regarding your test using dialup, did you physically unplug the network card to do the test or just unplugged the network cable??

I can not say for definte without doing some tests, but i beleive you will need to unplug the network card completely.

Then try the dialup

Appologies if you have already tried this

When I was testing the early versions of the AltEPG image I had to physically remove the network card to get it to use dial-up.

(not necessary with my original TiVo so there's obviously something 'clever' in the Alt image).

(reason for edit: just to avoid confusion I replaced "an original TiVo" with "my original TiVo". My Tribune TiVo used the standard Turbonet driver rather than Silicon Dust tools (see next post))

On a standard TiVo disk with a NIC installed using the Silicon Dust tools, switching between Network or Dialup, it was necessary to run the nic_config_tivo utility or pull the card. There is also the random issue where the TiVo just suddenly decides to stop using the network and chooses to operate through Dialup irrespective of the settings being correct.

On the later AltEPG images the system will automatically boot the relevant NIC driver for the card installed, configure your LAN settings from DHCP and use the Network for connectivity. If no NIC is installed, as before, the system will default to Dialup and finally, if you do have the NIC installed but do want to use Dialup instead, you only need to put something into the Dial Prefix field to trigger the system to use Dialup. Now in the latest images, the Exa-Networks and London-Web numbers are already setup in tclient.conf, so there no need to put a number in the Dial Prefix fields (although you can still try alternative numbers there as it will override the default number), so I recommend just putting a Comma (pause code) in the Dial Prefix field to force a call through the modem and use one of the standard numbers.

So its very handy and easy to switch between Network and Dialup now on the AltEPG images but It's important to remember that any entry (even just a pause command) in the Dial Prefix field is effective a switch instruction to force the TiVo to use the modem instead of the NIC.

Yeah, I honestly don't think there's an issue with it accessing the dialup. I can check by picking up the phone when it does it's call.

I'm obviously not that sure what is going on, and what is supposed to be going on, but it looks like there's some issue with the emulator.
