We've all been very busy trying out the new system, and no doubt with all the time we have spent on getting our Tivos to work again we have probably cancelled the odd trip to the shops, noy taken the kids out, or even denied our beloved some romantic trip somewhere.

Let's pause for a second though, and think about how much fuel this project has saved the planet! Hey, not only do we get our Tivos working but we also have cut out a pile of CO2!

That is so cool! How does it compare to a petrol or "the fuel of Satan" type car? And how does it compare to an intergalactic space cruiser?

No brainer really, I do about 34 miles round trip to work and back and it costs me the grand total of around 60p a day in electric
Oh and did I tell you EV's are tax free too

I wont say its the bees knees in transport and we still have a regular oil burner but for all those local trips the EV gets used, I really grimace when filling the oil burner these days, it costs £70 now .......and all gone in just under 500miles

As I said its not the bees knees in green transport or any kind of transport TBH, for me its not why I drive one its cos its cheap

Having said that, a power station is way more efficent than any normal car burning regular fuel and if the lecy is produced vai nuclear then no CO2 at all OK so the locals may glow in the dark a bit but its a small price to pay for me getting to and from work cheaply

Just off on a 3,000 mile jaunt around France and I get through 15mpg Super Unleaded so I a may be undoing your good work for the planet. I am feeling socially responsible though as I am using a renewable energy source - every time the fuel gauge shows 'empty' (which is quite often) I go to a petrol station and magically I am able to renew my tank - never let me down! This was last year's holiday trip from my Garmin:



Got it down to 12mpg at one point. As it says in the thread title - I am having fun.

To counter the rise in petrol prices I have been putting marbles in my fuel tank.

Therefore it now only costs me £13 to fill my Vauxhall Astra.

Sadly it's cost me £240 in marbles and my car doesn't seem to go very far between refuelling - roughly the distance from ASDA petrol station to Tescos.

Could this be caused by the extra weight I wonder?

Err rubbish. The whole lifecycle CO2 cost of an electric car is the same or more than that of a petrol car. (And if you are basing your figures on using nuclear generated electricity (dunno cos you don't cite sources for your "fact" ) then it's even worse when the enviro "cost" to decommission the nuclear plant is incorporated.

wheras there are many options of how to produce electricity and some of those produce virtually no CO2 at all.

But none of those sources can meet CURRENT demand for leccy let alone the 5-fold increase which would be required if the UK switched wholly to EVs. At uni we worked out how many wind turbines we would need to meet UK demand for leccy, the answer was basically "Norfolk". Yep, the whole county!!

I have to agree with Rachel due to real facts!

The whole lifecycle CO2 cost of an electric or electric-hybrid is twice that of a modern petrol car, assuming a lifecycle of 100,000 miles, and a UK standard mix of coal/oil/nuclear/wind/etc power source. The company I work for (a very large UK blue chip engineering company) produced a report 2-3 years ago dispelling the myths around electric or electric-hybrid cars.

It is in the creation, shipping and disposal of the electric or electric-hybrid batteries that the problem of CO2 emissions arise.

Yep make the most of it. It was only 15 years ago that govt was wetting itself about diesel cars being "the answer" to the fuel crisis and subsidising the oily stuff accordingly. Then diesel became popular so revenue from petrol sales started dropping and they hoiked the price of diesel. It used to be < half the price of petrol, now it's £6.30 a gallon vs. £6.08 for petrol.
