Could they kill the boxes altogether??

Postby LarryDavidJr » Wed Feb 16, 2011 9:24 pm

I'm thinking final software updates that halt the phone calls etc. which might be difficult to undo afterwards, and might especially make custom EPG difficult? (I'm thinking it wont be long until they get wind of plans for alternate EPG's).

I'm thinking I may disconnect my modem cable right now to be on the safe side...... or is that just paranoid?

I'm assuming that they will change the sub status to be "account closed" and the box will enter "boat anchor" mode.

If they do make a final software update it will trash all modified TiVos.

I don't think they will interfere with the boxes, I'm not even sure that would be legal since we all bought them outright.

They will just probably just turn off all access from service numbers starting 023 at their end.

They probably don't care much about what we do to provide our own EPG data, its no longer comes under "service circumvention" as firstly we already paid for the service and its tivo that is ceasing it and secondly, for that very reason we can't be accused of circumventing a subscription they are refusing to provide!

We should hope there is a final update, to turn off nag screens.

Would not count on it.

Don't worry, nag screens go with the replacement EPG.

The worst that Tivo could do would be a software level block of some sort. As they're stating publicly that we'll be able to replay recordings that seems unlikely

I'm assuming the biggest potential pitfall would be if you needed to rereun guided set up or emergency kickstart to view a previous recording and the Tivo number is no longer available - at that point you're stuck I think?

If the alternative EPG is in place then we'll be able to reimage the drive and put it back into operation.

Can we prevent them from setting our statuses to "Account Closed" ( besides not allowing any futher "official" EPG updates ?

If a TiVo's account status changes to "closed" can a re-image fix this ?

You could unplug it on 31st May to prevent that, but...

..yes, the account status becomes irrelevant following the re-image with the new system.

I'd be using phrases like "Computer Misuse Act" in their direction if they did something to unnecessarily impair the operation of a piece of equipment which, by the way, I have actually paid for.

(This is 'unnecessarily impair' in the sense of more than they're already doing by hanging us out to dry with no listings, obviously.)

Absolutely - I don't think TiVo's lawyers would want to go down that particular route.

Best they might claim is that the (non-GPL bits) software is copyright but even here I can't see what redress they could claim - we are not copying the software nor are we using it "for a purpose other than for which it was intended". Plus after 31st May (when our Agreements cease) we are no longer bound by California law but we can justifiably claim jurisdiction under English Law, with nice UK judges 8) :)

(by which I mean we could reasonably claim we have purchased a license to use the TiVo software and there is nothing in the TiVo Agreement to prohibit us from using it after they terminate said Agreement! There are precedents in UK law that allow this. ;) )

It's easy to fix via a script. A script called fixup25.tcl that's on my website.

Hi, I'm new here too and excited as I like to tinker !

Anyone know if we will be able to keep our existing recordings with the new image? I have a lot to watch !

Cheers all.

I envisage a couple of options including an image restore, ideally used for new builds when upgrading your disk as done previously with standard 2.5.5 builds.
This option would of-course be a wipe and fresh start, although the potential is always there to backup and restore settings (assuming tsids compatibility exists to enable previous settings to still work).

The other option would be to just install a package that will update your existing build to work with the new epg source.
