Issue in 'record by channel'

Postby swuk » Fri Jul 15, 2011 3:52 pm

I've found a problem with the AltEPG image when using 'Record by channel'.

When I get to the screen with the date / channel / programme listing - if I select the channel with the up/down buttons, then no problem. If, however, I enter the channel numbers directly, e.g. 103 to jump to ITV1, then the EPG shown is for the alphabetically first ITV1 region, which is Anglia. Same happens with BBC1. I'm on Virgin Cable.

However, because I'm in a different region, and my "Channels I Receive" are set up correctly, I can't pick any programmes on ITV1ANG or BBC1XYZ. I have to go "down" a channel, which then brings up the right EPG region.

I'm guessing it's an error in the AltEPG ISO image, because I've not seen this problem before.

My vanilla Tivo image gives the same symptoms. I suspect it is caused by having multiple channels on the same number. I have also noticed it does not always jump to the first channel alphabetically, although it does do mostly. It is only really a problem for me on channels 1 and 3 and I use the word "problem" very loosely. I am just so grateful that my Tivo is still working OK that I was certainly not going to raise this as an issue.

Sure, there's a way to work around it, but as it didn't happen previously, I thought I'd report it and someone can add it to the to-do list in whatever priority they see fit. :)

Ah, but the only reason that it didn't happen previously was because Tribune had thousands of different lineups (based on all the postcodes), and you got the right one for your postcode when you ran Guided Setup, and you ended up with just 1 ITV on 103. In fact I think with the Tribune system you only had two channels on the same number with dual lineups (eg Sky TV+Radio) - and when you did, same behaviour.

Unfortunately there's no way we can replicate that, the decision was taken a long time again to just have a small number of lineups and that way we have a fighting chance of maintaining them.

The side-effect of this is that all the ITVs and BBCs are given to everyone - so what you're seeing is merely how the TiVo 2.5.5 software behaves when you have multiple channels on the same number, nothing more sinister.

I'm sure it's obvious, but we don't have a to-do list for the TiVo 2.5.5 software :!: :-)

Edit: However, if you don't like it I think you could use the ChannelMap module in TiVoWebPlus to remove the other ITV1s that you don't want from your lineup manually? That way you'd only get them back if you re-ran Guided Setup. But I could be completely wrong.

Ah, OK, thanks for the explanation. No need to go onto anyone's list then.

It might be useful to have a look at the ChannelMap module though, in case other people have the same issue it would be nice to know of a work-around.

Curious..... I've always had this 'problem' even under the old regime. It's a minor irritation, but no more than that.

Indeed. From what I can tell, all you have to do is map the callsigns that you don't want to use (and you don't have selected in CIR) to spare dummy channel numbers. Obviously it's up to you to remember what you've done in case you want to put them back :-). The module even provides save / load routines for this.
