This lot claim to offer a 0845 dial-up

These are the only dial-up settings you'll ever need:

Tivo uses UUNET POPs, and that's how international dialup has always worked,
e.g. there are local toll free numbers in most major countries

UNITED KINGDOM All Country +44 845 0885336 ISDN V.34+ K56flex V.90
UNITED KINGDOM Freephone +44 800 2795740 ISDN V.34+ K56flex V.90
UNITED KINGDOM GSM Mobile +44 845 0810054 V110 9.6Kbs
UNITED KINGDOM Freephone +44 808 1050026 ISDN 224MNP V.32 V.34 K56flex V.90 X2, standard_MWAN

Normal dialup is no use. It needs a specific login mechanism.

However thinking about this further (just as I was about to enter the 0808 UUNet number in to the dial prefix on my test AltEPG dialup Tivo) the problem is obviously that if those numbers are used the Tivo will then try to connect to Tivo's servers and not the AltEPG servers. For this solution to work would require Tivo to agree to reassign that IP address to the AltEPG servers or the Tivo to be hacked to change the IP address to which it needs to connect to that of the AltEPG's Tivo server.

Tivo would only be willing to reassign that IP address if it has been uniquely and only been used as the IP address for the UK S1 Tivos. Even if it has they may well not be willing to do so in order to help a non official UK EPG get going.

Or could the IP address that a Tivo needs to contact during its dialup call be altered during a daily call to the AltEPGs servers on its own dialup number so that the UUNet Pops could then in future be used?

So we really need a dialup Pop provider willing to emulate Tivo's specific login procedures unless those login procedures can be altered to standard internet dialup login procedures during the course of a daily call to the AltEPG servers. Although more likely a formal software update is needed. If this software update could be done through the AltEPG dial up numbers then thereafter the UUNet dialup servers could be used.

Obviously I have no idea about the logistics involved in providing such a software update that just changed the dial up details or also how long each daily call to collect that software update might be? I suspect it would not be any longer than collecting the full EPG during Guided Setup though?

Were doing a multi line dialup soon. It will be running on ISP dialup kit. Were just waiting for a geographics number to be issued and router and we will be good to go

Two scenarios:

For drive imaged tivos any dialup will do, as they have the altEPG ip address already setup in Addr.tcl and tclientUK.tcl
The dialup is just used to gain internet access.

It's for unhacked unopened TiVos that need the special dialup number that will rewrite tivo ip to altpg ip on the fly remotely.

Correct me if I'm wrong...

You need a dialup that will present an unauthenticated ppp session. This is not the norm.

So how many phone lines were there around the end of May?

I'm just interested in how many people could connect.

When I first changed my prefix to AltEPG I got through within three tries. Now I'm failing all the time - haven't successfully connected since Friday 27th.

I want to use the terbonet card I have stashed away, but haven't had time to take TiVo apart and mount the drives in a spare PC.

One option that appeals is to put the terbonet card in and then try to make the changes over serial - anyone tried this?

Yesterday there was the same number of phone lines as there is today.

Obviously there are now more people trying to switch to the AltEPG service. We've just had a bank holiday weekend when people would have more time to sit down and read all this stuff.

You don't need to install the Terbonet card to use serial PPP. However you do still need to mount the drive in a PC if you've not installed network/serial drivers already (so you won't gain anything by using serial if you already have a Terbonet card).

I don't think I made my self clear:
I have a terbonet card in a jiffy bag.

I like the idea of
1) unscrewing the lid of TiVo and putting terbonet card on motherboard and cable through a hole in the case
2) plugging network card into router
3) using PPP to make changes to TiVo script to use IP over dial up

It's just me being lazy.
I also thought that the drivers were somehow in version 2.5,5 of TiVo.

I'll just have to bite the bullet and do it properly when I've got a couple of hours and I've got sick of the busy tone on AltEPG.

The danger however is that as the AltEPG is in the hands of heavy duty techies they forget how frightening any talk of opening up your Tivo or imaging drives is to most Tivo users.

I would be happy to use an 0845 number and if that covers the cost of supplying the dialup service so much the better. As for upgrading unmodded Tivos, it's not only frightening but decidely dangerous as there are exposed electrical parts which need to be avoided with care even when opening the case.

Network drivers were never built in to any official UK version of TiVo software.

Indeed.

And in view of the age of the hard drive the only easy option would be to buy a new one with the AltEPG image on from tivoland or TC and then install that along with the network card in the Tivo.

Failing that its pull the drive and reimage it yourself with the AltEPG image using some old PC or USB to SATA adapter for your notebook PC but for a drive(s) of this age it probably isn't worth it compared to buying a new 500GB or 1TB drive from one of the two above firms with the AltEPG image and all the hacks and Tivoweb already pre-installed.
