Does it check, realise that it doesn't need to go the download stage, and give a Failed. Number not answering message? Because when I tried, the call seemed to be answered, and connected, before giving that failed message.
No if there was no new data to collect you would still get a Setting Clock and Succeeded message when the daily call completed. You only get the Failed message because the Tivo isn't managing to get through to Tivo's servers at all.
If you are with various cheap phone providers it might be worth trying putting 1280 in front of the 020 or 0845 number as that would force the call to be routed via BT's network and they probably have less flakey lines with less heavily voip based strangulation of the modem signal that may be causing the call to fail. On the other hand if you are a TalkTalk or Virgin Media phone customer you won't be able to use the 1280 prefix as their phone solution does not use BT Wholesale phone line equipment.
Thanks, Pete. I don't think the call is failing in that sense, I suspect everything will work fine on Monday. I was just trying to think how Mike got a successful download today.
I'm on Pipex, which is Talk Talk now - what isn't! But my phone line is rented by Pipex from BT, and BT fix any faults, so I should be able to use that 1280 prefix? If so, would using it affect whether calling a particular number would be free in an anytime package by any chance? Don't know what Pipex do, but if it was sent through BT, I'm pretty sure their package would treat the 0207 number as free. Or is it charged before it gets routed - probably.
I attempted to make a connection throughout yesterday by progressively using the (5) different listed Tivo numbers. I first started, and then finished, with 0207. When I gave up at approx. 15:00, the next computerised attempt was listed as sometime today. I left 0207 in as the default. I was then suprised to find in the evening that a dial-up/download was in progress - completely non-initiated by myself.
Where I have free anytime calls with BT, I too have found this morning, by looking at my account, that I have been charged for (3) 0207 calls made from Thursday thro' to Friday (48 hours behind) - 29p, .43p and .36p. No doubt all my failed calls made yesterday will also be charged.
Thus, I have to consider whether it would be a cheaper option to disable the daily dail-up in favour of just one attempted weekly update until such time Tivo disconnects the 0207 line - or should I now dedicate myself using the altepg option.
